Is a plastic surgeon a skin specialist?
Although plastic surgeons treat problems associated with the skin such as skin cancers and burns, the specialty of plastic and reconstructive surgery encompasses so many areas such microvascular tissue transfer, craniofacial surgery for congenital defects such as cleft lip and palate, post mastectomy breast reconstruction and all areas of cosmetic surgery from head to toe. Plastic surgeons have prior training in general surgery and have the knowledge and experience to apply these principles to difficult reconstructive problems requiring not only skin but soft tissue, muscle and bone.
