Wonderful Patients

On Monday I had a the pleasure of seeing a patient that made me feel good to be a plastic surgeon. I had the opportunity of performing breast augmentation on a wonderful young woman who is so happy with her results. She was a great candidate for this procedure but unfortunately she had a congenital clotting disorder and many people told her surgery was not possible. However she had an excellent hematologist who devised a safe regimen of drugs to prevent blood clots and bleeding to enable her surgery to be performed safety. Needless to say her surgery went fine and she has achieved the figure she desired. We all are so happy for her.

Are there costs to correct unsatisfactory cosmetic surgery results?

As an experienced cosmetic surgeon, it is my goal to meet all of my patients expectations and produce an excellent result. Once in a while, an unsatisfactory result occurs and I will always try to make my patients happy. There are usually costs involved which include surgeons fees, facility charges, and anesthesia fees. In most cases, I will waive the surgeons fee. If a touch up can be done in my office, there might be a minor charge for materials. In other cases, the patient would have facility and anesthesia charges (if required).

How often will more cosmetic surgery be necessary to give me the result I want?

The answer to this question lies in your expectations of the results of the surgery, your surgeons evaluation and the procedure you have had performed. Patients have different expectations of the results that can be obtained with cosmetic surgery. With a candid discussion with your plastic and cosmetic surgeon, it must be determined if your goals can realistically be met. Different procedures produce different results. A well performed facelift may last up to seven years. You will continue to age but if you have a twin sister, you should look better for a longer period than her. If you choose to maintain your result, further surgery may be indicated. Breast augmentation patients may require further surgery to maintain a specific result due to the effects of aging, child birth and weight fluctuation on the breasts.

Is a plastic surgeon a skin specialist?

Although plastic surgeons treat problems associated with the skin such as skin cancers and burns, the specialty of plastic and reconstructive surgery encompasses so many areas such microvascular tissue transfer, craniofacial surgery for congenital defects such as cleft lip and palate, post mastectomy breast reconstruction and all areas of cosmetic surgery from head to toe. Plastic surgeons have prior training in general surgery and have the knowledge and experience to apply these principles to difficult reconstructive problems requiring not only skin but soft tissue, muscle and bone.

Bra Wearing and Bra Comfort Following Breast Augmentation

After undergoing breast augmentation surgery, your surgeon will direct you in wearing the proper bra to ensure support and help the breast implant settle into position.

Your cosmetic surgeon will give you a special bra designed to aid in the recovery process following your breast augmentation surgery. Once you are not required to wear the special bra, you may be allowed to wear a normal bra for comfort reasons depending on your individual breast size and needs. In general, a bra is recommended to help maintain the positive results of your breast augmentation. When considering an underwire bra, it is often recommended that a patient wait at least one month after surgery before wearing one.

Breast implants may require additional support, especially saline breast implants, which are heavier than silicone breast implants. Mentor has designed a special line of bras designed to be worn by women following breast augmentation surgery. These bras are designed both to support the breast implant and to enhance the cosmetic result of breast augmentation.

It is very important to discuss bra wearing and bra comfort following your breast augmentation in great detail with your cosmetic surgeon. Be sure you know everything you should do and when you should do it. After experiencing the cost and procedure of a breast augmentation, you certainly do not want to damage your breast skin by stretching it too much during your recovery period. Be sure to consult a qualified cosmetic surgeon before making any decisions concerning breast augmentation surgery.

What questions should I ask my cosmetic surgeon about my surgery?

* What are the risks and complications with my surgery?

* How long is the recovery period and what can I expect?

* Am I a good candidate for this procedure and are my expectations realistic?

* Will I need to take time off work and if so, how much time?

* Remember there are no stupid questions. Take your time to find answers to all of your questions so both you and you plastic surgeon are comfortable with your decision.

Can I eat regularly after a tummy tuck?

Although in the immediate postoperative periods some patients may have some nausea and vomiting, a regular diet can be resumed as soon as possible. As opposed to bariatric surgery, no anatomical changes are made to the digestive tract and no restrictions are placed on eating with a tummy tuck.
