How much breast tissue is removed with a breast reduction?

The amount of breast tissue removed in breast reduction will vary from patient but can generally be categorized in large, medium and small reductions. Large reductions include removal of over a 1000 grams of tissue per side, medium 500-1000 and small less than 500 grams per side. The amount removed depends on the amount of breast tissue present, height and weight of the patient and nipple location. In most cases of medium and large reductions, insurance reimbursement may be obtained however insurance carriers increasingly take into account patients height, weight, and body mass index or BMI.
