Breast Implants and the FDA

The Food and Drug Administration determines what drugs and medical devices can be released for use in the medical marketplace. It also determines how this drugs and devices are classified and what are their indications for use. Breast implants are one such medical device. Currently the FDA permits use of both saline and silicone gel breast implants for cosmetic and reconstructive indications. Gel implants have certain limitations and may not be used for patients under twenty-two years of age. The FDA reviews adverse results, clinical studies, risks and complications. It also determines what information must be communicated to patients.
