What is a gummy bear implant?

Gummy Bear refers to a new generation of silicone gel implants that will soon be released by the FDA pending submission of further data by the implant manufacturers. These implants have been in use in Europe for several years. They are made of a very highly cohesive gel that when ruptured retains its original shape. These implants are being produced in a number of different shapes and sizes. The implants tend to feel harder and do not displace laterally when lying down as normal breast tissue and less cohesive gel implants. They also require a larger incision for placement and have the consistency of a hard gel. Current cohesive gel implants that are on the market tend to retain the shape with little or no tendency to migrate when ruptured.

Is anesthesia used for injectable filler procedures?

In most cases local nerve blocks are performed to eliminate pain from local filler injection. Sometimes as with Botox local anesthesia is not required. Dr. Linderman makes every effort to minimize patient discomfort with these less invasive procedures.

Liposuction and Cellulite

Cellulite is skin condition resulting in dimpling and irregularity of the skin surface due to fibrous band attachments to the underlying tissues. It is similar to the quilting of a mattress. Cellulite is not an indication for liposuction and may in some instances actually become more noticeable following liposuction. Cellulite can sometimes be improved by releasing some of these fibrous attachments and fat grafting to these areas. The results are not perfect but can provide improvement.

Will I experience pain with the injectable filler procedure?

With the use of nerve blocks combined with local anesthetics pain is minimized with injection of fillers. Injection of Botox may be done without local anesthesia but pain is usually is minimal. Patients will vary as will the amount of filler required. Dr. Linderman makes every effort to make this a well tolerated experience.

Where does the injectable filler procedure take place?

Placement of injectable fillers such as Restylane and wrinkle modifiers such as Botox is done in Dr. Linderman's office. The procedures take between ten and twenty minutes depending upon the number of areas treated and the volume injected.

What should I look for in a surgeon to perform an injectable filler procedure?

Certainly when seeking out a cosmetic surgeon to perform an injectable procedure, you should find a qualified individual with experience. As a plastic surgeon, I have the benefit of being able to offer my patients other options for facial rejuvenation if I do not think injectable fillers are the answer. Knowledge of the underlying anatomy and musculature is certainly an advantage that non surgical practitioners may not have.

Will I have drains after tummy tuck surgery?

Drains are routinely placed after tummy tuck surgery and may remain in place from four to seven days depending on drainage, the amount of liposuction performed and weight of skin removed. The drains are easily cared for and removed without difficulty in Dr. Linderman's office.

What are the risks and complications of liposuction?

With over 400,000 procedures in 2007, liposuction was the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical operation. When compared with the number of procedures the overall complication rate with liposuction alone is very low. Infection is extremely rare but when it occurs can be life threatening and associated with severe scarring. Again this incidence is much less than 1%. Excessive bleeding is possible, but by following accepted guidelines and limiting removal amounts to five liters or less, transfusion is rare. Additional risks include contour irregularity of the skin and asymmetry. Rare complications with liposuction include pulmonary emboli and blood clots in the legs.
