How is the injectable procedure performed?

For soft filler injections such as Restylane, the areas of concern are identified and marked. Local anesthetic may be injected into the site or a nerve block performed to eliminate the pain of injection of the filler. The filler is the injected with a very small needle in micro droplets or fine layers just under the skin in the dermis to increase volume and improve wrinkles. Botox is injected into specific muscles to paralyze their action that produces dynamic wrinkles.

Will I have much pain with breast augmentation?

Although pain tolerance will vary from patient to patient with breast augmentation surgery, adhering to several principles has remarkably decreased postoperative discomfort. These include gentle tissue handling and electrocautery dissection. In the immediate period after surgery exercises are begun in the recovery to prevent spasm of the chest wall muscles, which causes significant pain. Patients are instructed to shower when they return home and raise their arms over their heads. It is not uncommon for patients to go out socially on the day after surgery.

What is breast implant malposition?

Breast implant malposition is a problem that may occur after breast implant surgery due to shifting of the implant, capsular contracture or stretching of the implant pocket and overlying skin. Capsular contracture of an implant placed underneath the pectoral muscle may result in an implant which sits too high. Larger implants may cause tissue stretching with shifting of the implant inferiorly or laterally or a combination of both. Depending upon the cause malposition may be corrected with capsulotomy or capsulorraphy.

Will I lose sensation in my nipples after breast augmentation?

Although this is a reported complication of breast augmentation, it is very, very uncommon. Occasionally patients may have some hypersensitivity of the nipples , but this usually resolves in a few months. Areas of temporary sensory loss may persist for up to six months but usually return to normal after breast augmentation surgery.

Will my breast look larger after a breast lift?

The primary indication for breast lift surgery is to improve the shape of the breasts and produce more superior fullness. Altering breast shape and improving fullness may make the breasts appear larger. In some cases a breast implant is also added to increase the size of the breasts. Some women may present with severe breast ptosis and minimal breast tissue. Because of the sagging, the bra size may be bigger due to the effect of rolling the breasts up in a current bra but usually the bra cup is not adequately filled. By performing a breast lift, more fullness is obtained and although the bra cup size may decrease, the breast tissue completely fills the cup.

How much breast tissue is removed with a breast reduction?

The amount of breast tissue removed in breast reduction will vary from patient but can generally be categorized in large, medium and small reductions. Large reductions include removal of over a 1000 grams of tissue per side, medium 500-1000 and small less than 500 grams per side. The amount removed depends on the amount of breast tissue present, height and weight of the patient and nipple location. In most cases of medium and large reductions, insurance reimbursement may be obtained however insurance carriers increasingly take into account patients height, weight, and body mass index or BMI.
