What is the Inframammary Fold?

The Inframammary fold or IMF is the naturally occurring fold underneath the breast. The distance from the IMF to the nipple is an important measurement is assessing overall breast volume and breast implant size. The relationship of the nipple to the IMF determines whether breast ptosis is present. Some patients will present with a high tight IMF with a shortened distance to the nipple. In some cases it may be desirable to lower the IMF to increase this distance to allow placement of a larger breast implant.

What is an internal capsulorraphy?

An internal capsulorraphy is a surgical procedure that may be used to correct a malpostioned breast implant by placing multiple sutures on the inside of implant pocket to modify the size and shape of the pocket to allow the implant to maintain a better position. Patients may present with implant displacement inferiorly or laterally which can also change the relative position of the nipple. By closing off the pocket in these affected areas and enlarging it by capsulotomy superiorly and medially, implant position can be restored. This procedure takes attention to detail and meticulously placed sutures to correct implant malposition.

What should I do if I do not like the size of my new breasts?

Dr. Linderman makes every effort to meet his patients expectations/ This begins with a thorough examination and a candid discussion of what you desire from breast augmentation. In some patients because of certain breast characteristics, an optimum result cannot be achieved. Dr. Linderman will discuss these limitations with you during your initial consultation. Tight skin and minimal breast tissue may limit the amount of augmentation that be achieved.
