Can I change the size of my breasts after the initial surgery?

In most cases the size of patient’s breasts can be altered by changing implant size and dimension. Normally I encourage my patients to wait a minimum of six months before making decisions to alter implant size. Rarely will a patient request smaller implants. In planning breast augmentation surgery, I make every effort to meet my patient’s expectations and produce the size breast they desire. With the custom implant sizing implant that I use, a very accurate estimate of the final implant size can be made and prevent requests for later size alteration. Implants come with various projections, allowing a choice to made to fit the patient’s chest wall dimensions and skin characteristics.

Why is it important to find a board certified plastic surgeon?

Choosing a board certified plastic surgeon recognized the American Society of Plastic Surgeons assures you that your surgeon has completed an approved residency in plastic and cosmetic surgery and has passed both oral and written examinations to certified his competence in this specialized field of surgery. Ask your surgeon these simple questions. Is his board certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery? How of the procedures that you are requesting has he performed? And finally and most important does he have privileges to perform this procedure in an accredited hospital as opposed to an office or surgery center.

Steps to minimize pain after breast augmentation surgery

All of my patients are instructed in my 24 Hour Recovery Regimen, which greatly reduces postoperative pain and speeds recovery. Following breast augmentation, patients have pain from chest wall muscle spasm. By immediately starting a series of muscle stretching exercises, this discomfort can be greatly reduced and patients may return to everyday activities very quickly. Please read more about this regimen on my website under breast augmentation.

Breast Implant Placement --- Subglandular or Subpectoral

Breast implants can be placed either subglandular (behind the breast tissue and on top of the chest wall muscle) or subpectoral (underneath the chest wall muscle). Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages but in the majority of patients, I prefer the subpectoral position due to the lower incidence of capsular contracture and easier performance of mammograms. Some patients may have unsightly implant distortion from muscle contraction with subpectoral placement but this is infrequent. Subglandular placement is sometimes indicated in women who participate in body building expositions.

Breast Implants and the FDA

The Food and Drug Administration determines what drugs and medical devices can be released for use in the medical marketplace. It also determines how this drugs and devices are classified and what are their indications for use. Breast implants are one such medical device. Currently the FDA permits use of both saline and silicone gel breast implants for cosmetic and reconstructive indications. Gel implants have certain limitations and may not be used for patients under twenty-two years of age. The FDA reviews adverse results, clinical studies, risks and complications. It also determines what information must be communicated to patients.

How will breast augmentation surgery affect my yearly mammogram?

It is my policy to obtain a baseline mammogram on all women 35 and older and those with a strong family history of breast cancer. When having a mammogram, breast augmentation patients should tell their radiologists so additional views can be taken to better examine the breasts. Mammograms should be performed at the same intervals and age as recommended by their family physicians.

How do I prepare for my breast augmentation surgery?

To prepare for your Breast Augmentation surgery, carefully follow the pre operative instructions supplied by Dr. Linderman and avoid medications such as aspirin, herbal supplements, and ibuprofen for two weeks before your surgery. If you have questions about a particular condition or medication, please call the office. Do not have anything to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. Arrange for someone to take you and pick you up after surgery and you may not drive home.

New Advances in Breast Augmentation Surgery.

Probably the most significant changes in breast augmentation surgery are the surgical technique changes to reduce capsular contracture and the development of a more cohesive silicone gel to decrease or eliminate gel migration with rupture. Electrocautery dissection almost eliminates bleeding and when combined with a no touch technique of implant handling and early postoperative stretching exercises, capsular contracture has been greatly reduced. With my 24 Hour Recovery Regimen patients can rapidly return to daily activities.

Are there any additional implant surgeries required after the initial breast augmentation procedure?

With Breast Augmentation, additional surgeries are not anticipated but are sometimes required due to complications such as infection, bleeding, capsular contracture, implant malposition and implant deflation. Occasionally patients may request additional surgery to alter the size of the implants.
