What is capsular contracture after breast augmentation?

Capsular contracture is the development of inelastic scar forming around breast implants. This scarring can produce hardening of the implants, displacement and in some cases pain. Surgery may sometimes be necessary to remove or release this scarring. Implant placement of the breast implants underneath the chest wall muscle does decrease the overall incidence of capsular contracture.
