The Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction is a procedure similar to a breast lift, in that it involves an incision in the breast and the removal of skin to reposition the nipple. However, breast reduction also involves the removal of significant quantities of breast tissue to make the breasts smaller as well as more shapely. The result is normally perkier, more comfortable breasts that allow a woman to live a normal life. The operation typically resl\sults in an anchor or lollipop type scar that goes around the nipple and down to the chest wall. Scars tend to improve and fade with time. In some cases, liposuction may be used as part of the breast reduction procedure, and may help to reduce the length of the scars Recovery takes from four to six weeks and most patients return to work in one to two weeks with lifting restrictions.
Medically Necessary?
Insurance companies all have different standards for what makes a breast reduction qualify as a medically necessary procedure. Common standards include diagnosis of shoulder, neck, or back problems as a result of large breasts and the removal of a certain amount of tissue from each breast. Whether your insurance company will cover your breast reduction procedure depends on your policy and your circumstances.
Not all women who believe they need breast reduction actually do need it. First, make sure you are wearing an appropriate bra by having a professional fitting. Wearing an appropriate bra can reduce strain on the breasts, neck, back, and shoulders.
