Breast Reduction Surgery is used to treat the condition of macromastia or breast hyperplasia. Large over developed pendulous breasts are not only a cosmetic problem but also a medical and health concern. If you have back, shoulder or neck ache, shoulder grooving or intertrigo due to large breast size, then breast reduction surgery may be an option for you to consider. Out of proportion breast size and difficulty finding bras that fit may be a reason for you to consider breast reduction surgery.
Breast Reduction Consultation
Your consultation with Dr. Linderman will involve multiple steps to inform you about the surgery and thoroughly evaluate your desires and expectations. You will view an informational DVD on breast reduction surgery. During your private consultation with Dr. Linderman a physical exam will be performed and an estimate made of the amount of breast tissue to be removed. Before and after photographs will be presented and risks and complications discussed. Breast reduction is often covered by insurance reimbursement after submitting an estimate of the amount of reduction required. Aesthetic Plastic Surgery will submit the necessary claims on your behalf.

Breast Reduction Surgery
This surgical procedure may take two to three hours to perform and is usually done with an overnight stay at the hospital or our surgery center. Some patients may even be done as an outpatient. Patients must refrain form smoking for two weeks before and after surgery. Drains are placed that are removed the following day. Bathing and showering are permitted on the second postoperative day. Dressings are minimal and sutures are dissolvable and do not require removal. Pain is minimal and easily controlled with medication after discharge. Most patients can return to work in approximately one week and driving is allowed. Strenuous activity and exercise can be resumed within four to six weeks although walking and light exercise may sometimes be done in as little as two weeks postoperatively.
Complications from breast reduction surgery include but are not limited to infection, bleeding, wound healing problems, asymmetry, fat necrosis, nipple loss and scarring. Scars are permanent but usually improve in 12-18 months following surgery. Smoking does have an adverse effect on wound healing and must be avoided. Incidence of complications is low but does increase as the amount breast tissue removed increases.
In a high number of cases, breast reduction is covered by insurance reimbursement, which considers the amount of tissue removed, patient’s height and weight, and whether other non-surgical methods have been attempted.
Types of Breast Reduction
Currently there are three techniques of breast reduction that are selected according to the size of the reduction, nipple height, and patient’s health and surgeons preference. These methods include vertical breast reduction, inverted T or Wise pattern, and free nipple graft. Liposuction may be performed in combination with any of these techniques.
Vertical Breast Reduction
This procedure is indicated for small to moderate breast reductions and removed tissue from the central and lower part of the breast. It has the advantage of eliminating a transverse scar on the underside of the breast. For cases with a low nipple that requires significant superior transposition, this may not be the best choice for reduction.
Inverted T or Wise Pattern Reduction
This is one of the most commonly performed methods of breast reduction, which is adaptable for most women. It removes breast tissue medially and laterally and allows significant elevation of a low nipple. It is indicated for moderate and large reductions. The nipple remains attached to the breast tissue. This differs from the vertical breast reduction by the addition of a transverse scar underneath the breast.
Free Nipple Graft
This technique is sometimes employed in very large breast reductions. Scarring and tissue removal is similar to the Inverted T technique, but the nipple is completely removed and grafted to its new location.
