Breast augmentation can affect the breast tissue differently in different women because breast tissue varies from one woman to the next. How the body reacts to surgery and breast implants can vary from patient to patient. For these reasons, postoperative outcomes are not always the same. Dr. Linderman of Indianapolis, Indiana has performed over 6000 breast augmentation surgeries and has the experience to minimize postoperative complications following breast implant surgery.

Capsular Contracture

As time passes and the implants have been in place for several weeks or months, fibrous tissue naturally grows over them. Capsular contracture occurs when this fibrous tissue tightens around the implant and squeezes it. Mild cases of capsular contracture are not a cause for concern, although they can affect the cosmetic result. However, severe cases can cause the breast to harden, causing great pain to the patient and requiring surgery to remove the hardened tissue and allow more space for the implant. Following Dr. Linderman's postoperative instructions and having submuscular placement of the implant can greatly reduce your chance of experiencing capsular contracture.

Rippling

Once the swelling that results from breast implant surgery has subsided and the implant has settled into its final position, it pulls on the fibrous tissue and skin that has grown around the implant. This can cause rippling, or wrinkling of the breast tissue or overlying skin. Patients with thin skin are more likely to have rippling with saline implants. Overfilling the implants and placing them in the submuscular position can decrease and sometimes eliminate rippling. Another alternative is using silicone gel implants, which are less likely to cause rippling.

Hematoma

Hematoma is a collection of blood in the implant pocket following breast augmentation surgery. It occurs in approximately 2% of patients. With prompt evacuation results of breast augmentation should not be compromise. Bleeding is minimal and blood transfusion is not required. Dr. Richard Linderman employs electrocautery dissection in breast augmentation, which virtually eliminates bleeding and bruising to promote a rapid recovery.

Infection

While occurring in 1 % or less of cases, the possibility of infection exists after any surgery, including breast augmentation surgery. Infection when it occurs manifests itself within the first three weeks of surgery. Signs include redness, drainage and implant tenderness. Treatment involves appropriate cultures and antibiotics. In most cases implant removal is the best course of action followed by implant replacement in as little as three months. The best preventative measures involve regular use of anti-bacterial soap on the breasts and armpits for several days before your surgery. During the actual surgery, your surgeon will use Betadine on all areas near the incision sites. After surgery, be sure you follow your surgeon's exact instructions and if you experience a high fever, contact your doctor immediately.

These are some of the more common complications that can result from breast augmentation. The best prevention of these complications is to be sure you are well informed about your procedure, your cosmetic surgeon is experienced and qualified and your pre-operative and post-operative care guidelines are clear and followed exactly.
