Benefits and Risks of Breast Augmentation

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were 347,500 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2007. This made breast augmentation the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedure of that year. Breast augmentation also covers breast lifts, breast reductions, breast enlargements, and breast reconstruction. There are many reasons why someone would decide to go through this type of the procedure. A majority of those who decide on breast augmentation are satisfied with the results. In one study the overall patient satisfaction rate was over 96%.
If you are interested in breast augmentation, you need to remember that it is a type of surgery, and carries with it an element of risk. However, the benefits of breast augmentation far outweigh the complications.

Risks
While there are a number of benefits, there are also risks to breast augmentation, albeit small. However, you need to be aware of these before proceeding with the procedure. Some of the risks include:
- Implant deflation
- Extrusion
- Infection
- Capsular contracture
- Changes in nipple/breast sensation
- Tissue necrosis
- Excessive bleeding
- Dissatisfaction with cosmetic results
Again, these risks are very small. For example, the risk of infection is about one in 500. Excessive bleeding happens in less than two percent of breast augmentation procedures, and the amount of blood loss is less than an ounce. If you do lose sensation in your breasts or nipples, this is usually temporary and will return within six months. Capsular contracture is also uncommon, but may require additional surgery if it happens.
