Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed. Patients come from all walks of life, different socioeconomic backgrounds and with different expectations. Younger patients who are emotionally mature and older patients with realistic expectations are candidates for breast augmentation. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that all women are candidates for this type of procedure. There are several factors you should consider before you decide to go through with breast augmentation.
Women who decide on breast augmentation may do so for reasons such as:
- Never developed adequate breast tissue
- May have what many consider "normal" breast size, but want to enhance them from personal reasons
- Breast size shrank or began to sag after childbirth or breastfeeding
If you fit into one of these categories, you are a candidate for breast augmentation. A more complicated issue is that of who is a good, or even ideal, candidate. Factors that determine if you are a good candidate include your personal medical history. Breast augmentation may not be in your best interest if you have a history of any of the following:
- A history of mental illness
- A personal history of autoimmune diseases such as fibromyalgia, scleroderma, lupus, or HIV
- A family history of breast cancer
- Any other chronic disease that may impair your body's ability to heal itself, or that may make you more susceptible to infection
While these are all considerations you must make before you decide on this procedure, perhaps the most important one is your expectations. Realistic expectations must be made and Dr. Linderman confident that he can meet them. If all of these factors can be met, then you are a good candidate for breast augmentation.
When discussing these things with Dr. Linderman, other criteria that will be discussed are the type of incision to be made, the type of implant to be used, and the placement of the implants. In some cases, combining breast augmentation with another procedure, such as a breast lift, may be your best option.
