There are certain things about the post-operative healing part of breast augmentation that cannot be avoided. Pain and discomfort, bruising, and scarring fall into this category, and are side-effects — not complications. However, there are things you can do to minimize these aspects of a normal and common healing condition. Dr. Linderman will give you a list of instructions on what you should do to help you recover in the days after your breast augmentation surgery. One aspect of the recovery that is different is Dr. Linderman's soft touch technique and Twenty-Four Hour Quick Recovery. As soon as you're in the recovery room, these techniques will put you on your way to full recovery.
Expectations
There are many things that you will probably be concerned about that go beyond recovering from any pain and discomfort. Here are some of the things you should expect as you get back to your normal routine:
- Bruising — Some bruising may occur, depending on the implant size and way it was placed. However, Dr. Linderman's soft touch technique should help minimize this. This bruising should vanish in a couple of weeks. However, if you have large, painful bruises, contact Dr. Linderman to see if you have a hematoma.
- Itching — Everyone knows sometimes when we heal, we itch. Due to the stretching of the skin and the incisions from the surgery, you will probably have some itching. Dr. Linderman will advise you on what kind of lotion you may use to help alleviate this, or there may be other medications that will help. The itching will subside as you heal.
- Sensation — A lack of sensation in the nipples is common after breast augmentation surgery. This is a temporary condition due the nerves being disturbed. This sensation of numbness can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks.
- Scarring — There is no way to prevent scarring. However, the scars are a result of the incisions and are made in places that are inconspicuous. The incisions are also placed where they are least likely to interfere with healing, contracting infection, or other trauma. It can take up to a year before scars fade to a level where they are hardly noticeable.
- Swelling — The placement of the breast implant, as well as the body's natural reaction to surgery, will cause swelling. Depending on the location of the implant, you can expect swelling to last up to two weeks for subglandular placement and up to two months for submuscular placement. By sleeping in a reclined position, you may be able to help the swelling reduce more quickly.
By following Dr. Linderman's post-operative instructions, you should be able to return to work in a few days, and strenuous exercise within a couple of weeks.
