Breast augmentation is one of the most common forms of cosmetic surgery performed today. Although hundreds of women successfully undergo breast augmentation each year, it is still an invasive surgery that requires patience and time from which to recover.

After your surgery at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Indiana in Indianapolis, following Dr. Linderman's directions is the best advice to ensure a smooth recovery after breast augmentation surgery. The suggestions below will help you recover as quickly as possible and will help to minimize your chances of complications following your breast surgery. Dr. Linderman's gifted soft touch technique dramatically speeds recovery, and patients can shower right after their surgery.

Here's a list of Do's and Don'ts to help your recovery from breast augmentation surgery:

DO:

  • Have reasonable expectations for the results of your breast augmentation surgery.
  • Run all your errands prior to having your breast augmentation surgery.
  • Use a pill organizer to help you manage your prescriptions.
  • Make sure you have plenty of loose, comfortable clothes available to wear during your recovery
  • Take prescribed medication as directed.
  • Get as much rest as possible to ensure your body recovers quickly.
  • Take pictures to track the progress of results.
  • Review the signs of infection with Dr. Linderman and call us right away at 800-678-9909 if you suspect an infection.
  • Take showers to relax your muscles, but make sure the water isn't too hot.
  • Follow all post-surgical instructions.

DON'T:

  • Submerge your incisions in water. No baths, hot tubs, or pools during recovery.
  • Take over-the-counter vitamins, supplements, or medication without consulting Dr. Linderman first.
  • Wear your standard bras during recovery. We will give you special recovery bras.
  • Worry if your results are not immediately what you expected. Results change over time.
  • Rush your recovery. Patience and rest are crucial to great, long-lasting results.

Post-Operative Instructions

Following your surgery and release from the outpatient surgery center, you should return home and take a two-hour nap. Get up and have a bite to eat and take 800 mg of Motrin. After 20 minutes, you may remove your bra and gauze covering your incisions and take a light shower. You may also wash your hair.

Lightly blow-dry the tapes covering your incisions and reapply fresh gauze and your bra. You may also blow dry your hair. Raising your arms above your head is advisable to prevent stiffness and speed your recovery. Motrin 800 mg may be taken three times per day to reduce pain with little risk of nausea.

Raise your arms gently over your head and perform a set of 4-5 overhead stretches every hour during the first few days to help with soreness.

Bruising and swelling are common after surgery.

Taking photos of your breasts after the surgery may help you track your progress. Small improvements are sometimes difficult to notice over a course of time. Photographs help construct a chronological timeline of your progress.

It's important to keep your body hydrated following breast augmentation surgery. Have plenty of water, juice, and other liquids nearby during your recovery.

Keep a continual record of your recovery progress. Keeping Dr. Linderman informed allows him to assess any potential postoperative issues.

Make sure you follow all of Dr. Linderman's directions as closely as possible to ensure that your recovery goes as quickly and smoothly as possible.

If you have any questions following your breast surgery, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Linderman; he will be more than happy to get back to you with further instructions, if necessary.
