One of the most common problems besides hypoplasia or small size that women seek breast augmentation is breast asymmetry. Asymmetry may involve differences in size, shape, position and chest wall abnormalities. Some problems may be improved by use of different size or shaped implants. Asymmetry of the inframmary fold, which is the natural crease underneath the breast, may require surgically raising or lowering the fold, which not always be possible. Sometimes one breast is positioned differently on the chest wall and complete correction is not feasible. Other conditions include lack of development of the underlying chest wall muscle which is a congenital condition called Poland’s Syndrome.
Frequently one breast may be more ptotic and require breast lift or mastopexy. Another condition that is frequently encountered is tuberous breast deformity, which may involve one or both breasts. In this abnormality there is lack of development of parts of the breast associated with herniation of breast tissue beneath the nipple sometimes causing stretching of the areola. The base of the breast is often constricted and the inframmamary located high with a short distance between the nipple and the fold. Internal modification of the breast tissue is often required. Often the other breast is larger and has ptosis-requiring mastopexy.
In summary the breasts must be fully evaluated by an experienced plastic surgeon familiar with these various conditions. By thoroughly evaluating breast shape, size, dimensions, skin quality and chest symmetry, Dr. Richard Linderman can arrive at a surgical plan to improve and correct problems of breast asymmetry.
