Breast Lift / Mastopexy Questions
1. How do I determine if I need a breast lift or mastopexy?
The relation of the nipple to the fold below the breast (inframammary fold) determines whether a breast lift or mastopexy is indicated. The degree that the nipple lies below the fold determines the amount of lift required and the amount of skin excision needed. The amount of skin excision determines the location and the number of incisions required around the nipple, below the nipple and along the inframammary fold.
2. Will addition of a breast implant lift the breast?
In less severe cases of breast ptosis, breast augmentation with an implant alone may correct the ptosis. In more severe cases with excess skin and deficient breast tissue, a combination breast augmentation and breast mastopexy is usually indicated.
3. When is a breast lift without an implant indicated?
In patients with breast ptosis with a moderate amount of breast tissue, a mastopexy alone may be performed. An innovative technique used by Dr. Linderman called a Brazilian mastopexy translocates the patients own breast tissue to a lifted or higher position using a small muscle flap to maintain the correction over time without use of an implant.
4. What is a periareolar mastopexy?
A periareolar or Benelli mastopexy uses a purse string suture around the areola to lift the breast and avoid a vertical or transverse scar under the breast. It is frequently employed in patients requesting breast augmentation requiring a small to moderate breast lift.
5. Is recovery more extensive with a mastopexy?
Generally the recovery and amount of discomfort is similar to breast augmentation surgery.
6. What is an Anchor Type Breast Lift?
An Anchor Breast Lift refers to the shape of the skin pattern that is removed with this type of Mastopexy. The final scar is T shaped. This type of procedure is used in more extensive breast lifts where the nipple must be lifted more than a few centimeters. This is determined by the degree of ptosis that the patient presents with and the amount of breast volume increase that is required.
