Eyelid Surgery / Blepharoplasty Questions
1. How do I know if a blepharoplasty is right for me?
A blepharoplasty procedure is often recommended for someone who is experiencing drooping upper eyelids or bagginess and puffiness around the eyes. This first sign of aging can give the face a tired and haggard appearance.
Blepharoplasty does not correct crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, dark circles under the eyes, or a heavy brow. Dr. Linderman would recommend other procedures to correct these problems.
2. When can I return to work after blepharoplasty surgery?
You will experience some bruising and swelling that will last about a week after blepharoplasty surgery.
3. Will blepharoplasty surgery affect my vision?
You may experience some mild blurring of vision for the first few days after blepharoplasty eyelid surgery which rapidly resolves.
4. How soon after blepharoplasty may I wear my contact lenses?
You can usually begin wearing your contact lenses about one week after your blepharoplasty procedure.
5. What type of anesthesia is used for blepharoplasty surgery?
Depending upon the patient, general anesthesia or monitored local anesthesia with sedation may be employed.
6. Are there any medications I should not take before blepharoplasty surgery?
In preparation for your blepharoplasty, Dr. Linderman will have you refrain from taking aspirin and all aspirin related products for two weeks before and two weeks after surgery. This will help decrease the risk of bleeding which can be caused by these products.
Also, intake of Vitamin E should be limited to only what is found in a multi-vitamin, no large volume doses two weeks before or two weeks after abdominal surgery because this can also cause a bleeding tendency.
7. Are herbal remedies safe to continue taking before eyelid surgery?
Often overlooked are the negative effects herbal remedies may have upon anesthesia, drug interaction, bleeding tendency, or the body’s ability to heal after blepharoplasty. Simply because a product carries a label saying it is “natural” does not mean it is necessarily safe when interacting with other drugs.
Example of herbal remedies to be avoided prior to surgery are Ephedra, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Kava, Melatonin, Valerian, Ginko, Echinacea, Garlic, Bilberry, Cayenne, and Ginger.
Check with Dr. Linderman to find out how long you need to be off particular herbal remedies before eyelid surgery.
