Liposuction Recovery
Indianapolis, Indiana
After any cosmetic surgery procedure, whether invasive or non-invasive, it is imperative to follow Dr. Linderman’s post-procedure instructions to ensure a speedy recovery free from complications. You can trust board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Linderman of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Indiana, to guide you through the recovery process and make sure you are in tip-top shape and ready to resume your normal activities when recovery is complete.
Liposuction recovery depends on the number of areas treated and amount of fat Dr. Linderman removed during the procedure. For some liposuction patients, one day of bed rest may be sufficient. For more areas, more days are required, of course. Typically, a compressive garment to minimize bruising and swelling is usually worn for up to four weeks after the procedure.
Dr. Linderman often performs liposuction on his patients' arms, waist, buttocks, hips, face, neck, thighs and abdomen. One of the most popular liposuction techniques used in our office is called tumescent liposuction, which was invented by a California dermatologist. It's a relatively new procedure that can reduce post-operative bruising, swelling, and pain. Tumescent liposuction also reduces the chance that a blood transfusion will be necessary.

Any patient who is a candidate for traditional liposuction is usually also a good candidate for the tumescent technique. Although the anesthesia requirements are lessened and blood loss is minimized with this approach, patients who have the procedure still face the same risks and complications associated with traditional liposuction. Dr. Linderman will explain the procedure and risks with you in great detail at the time of your appointment.
Following tumescent liposuction, the long-acting effects of the anesthetic solution help provide relief from the pain after the procedure and decrease the need for additional pain medication. For the first day or two after surgery, most patients experience swelling in the treated areas as well as some fluid drainage from the incision sites.
Dr. Linderman offers the following suggestions for a speedy recovery from liposuction:
Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
Don’t drink alcoholic beverages for 48 hours after surgery.
Wear compression garments to prevent slow healing and excessive drainage.
Do NOT apply ice packs or a heating pad to skin overlying the liposuctioned areas.
Do NOT apply hydrogen peroxide or band-aids to incision sites.
Do NOT submerge your incision sites in water for at least seven days following liposuction.
Get assistance with moving around, dressing, walking, etc. until you are able to slowly work your way back to your normal routine.
Recovery from liposuction can be uncomfortable, but most patients are back to work within ten days. Pain medications may be prescribed to help alleviate discomfort.
