Ultrasonic Liposuction
Ultrasonic liposuction was first introduced in Italy in 1987. In traditional liposuction, fat cells are broken down by mechanical trauma and then removed with high-pressure suction. This method is still commonly practiced and is effective in areas of the body where the fat is softer and easy to remove. Ultrasonic liposuction uses a cannula or tube that emits high frequency sound waves which lyse or breakdown the fat cell membranes. The fat is then removed as in traditional liposuction. Ultrasonic liposuction is useful for fat removal in areas that have been less responsive to traditional liposuction due to a higher concentration of more fibrous fat. The ultrasonic technique with tumescent infusion is more effective in fat removal of this type of fat that is commonly found in men and certain areas of women such as the hip rolls and back. Because less mechanical trauma to the tissues is created, bruising and bleeding tend to be less. Skin contraction may also be improved with the ultrasonic technique.
Traditional liposuction as performed by Dr. Richard Linderman uses small cannulas from 2-4 mm in diameter. These smaller instruments allow tiny access incisions with less trauma.
