Dr. Linderman of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Indiana has helped countless patients refine and reshape their noses to achieve their desired facial look and balance. Rhinoplasty nose surgery is one of the most common and popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed today and is done to decrease or increase the size of the nose, refine or curve the bridge of the nose, and reshape the tip of the nose or nostrils. Rhinoplasty may also be performed to correct certain injuries, birth defects, and breathing problems.
The Road to Rhinoplasty Recovery
The road to recovery following rhinoplasty can be long. Along with the bruising and swelling, you will feel a stuffed up feeling. You may or may not have nasal packing. The swelling and pressure may be relieved by icing, and Dr. Linderman may recommend this. Some patients report that the best thing to ice it down with is a bag of frozen peas because they can be easily molded to your face.
You do ingest a bit of blood during the procedure, and it can make you feel sick. Patients sometimes report minor nausea. Your packing, if you have it, will be removed in a few days at your first post-operative consult.
You should stay sleeping in a 30 degree angle or at least with 2 fluffy pillows. This helps keep the swelling and bruising to a minimum as when the head is lower than the heart, it can dilate the capillaries and blood vessels more than is recommended. Also, the throbbing and swelling is increased when the patient is not elevated.
Within a week or two of your surgery, most of your bruises will be gone. The swelling generally goes away within the first week. You may see some swelling or slight bruises after the first two weeks, but other people will probably not notice.
You will probably feel stuffy for a few days after your surgery. During the first few days, you may have some bloody nasal discharge. Small amounts of blood are pretty standard, but any sustained bleeding or large volumes of blood should be reported to Dr. Linderman immediately. Even though you feel stuffy, try not to blow your nose for at least seven days. Otherwise, you'll disturb the wounds.
If you have nasal packing, Dr. Linderman may remove it when you have one of your post-op visits, typically a few days after your rhinoplasty nose surgery. With the packing removed, you will feel better almost instantly. By the end of two weeks, often earlier, all of the packing, dressing, splints and sutures will be removed.
