Tummy Tuck - Abdominoplasty Recovery
Indianapolis, Indiana
Recovery from a tummy tuck surgery will take some time, and, at times, it will not be pleasant. An abdominoplasty, especially a full abdominoplasty, is serious surgery. One thing you learn during the recovery is just how often you use your abdominal muscles on any given day. The evening after your tummy tuck surgery, you may be groggy from the anesthetic and/or oral medications. You actually probably won't remember much of the first day or two.
Suggestions on Recovering from Tummy Tuck Surgery
When you awake from surgery, your abdomen may be very swollen and throbbing. Take your pain medication as directed by Dr. Linderman. There is no need to suffer through this pain.
Keep in mind that bruising and swelling are normal.
Follow Dr. Linderman’s postoperative abdominoplasty instructions carefully and call immediately at the first sign of infection.
Change your dressings as directed.
Take your temperature regularly as a fever is a sign of infection.
Take all prescribed medications as directed.
Sleep with your head elevated for the first week or two or however long Dr. Linderman suggests. Use two or three good fluffy pillows to keep your head up or perhaps use a wedge-shaped pillow.
Follow up with Dr. Linderman as directed. He will check your drains, examine incisions, and see how you are doing.
Your sutures may be removed 5-10 days after surgery, but it may be longer depending on the individual patient.
If Dr. Linderman suggests this, wear your support garment around your abdomen.
Empty your surgical drains as often as Dr. Linderman has instructed you to. When you empty the drain, there is often liquid in the tube leading to the bulb. You can run your fingers down the tube to squeeze this liquid into the bulb each time you empty the drain. The liquid in the drain may be pink, reddish, brownish, and may have some solid material in it. It will look gross, and that’s normal. If you suddenly get bright red blood or a foul-smelling liquid, call Dr. Linderman immediately.
You will be encouraged to do a bit of walking every day in the first week and more as the weeks pass. Walking around helps prevent blood clot formation and eases swelling.
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
