Prior to proceeding with breast augmentation, woman 35 years of age and older should have a baseline mammogram performed to delineate abnormalities which may require further evaluation and to compare to later studies done after surgery. Following breast augmentation, woman should examine their breasts on a regular basis and have mammograms on a prescribed schedule after age forty. Patients with a strong family history of breast cancer should have a screening mammogram at an earlier age and regular follow up following breast augmentation surgery. Even with a breast implants, a good self-exam can be regular performed by the patient particularly with subpectoral implant placement. Caution signs include breast masses, skin dimpling, nipple discharge and swelling and should have further evaluation by your health care provider.
